SCSBOA Rankings, Week 6 (11/07/11)

This is my attempt to compare and adjust scores from competition to competition to create an overall ranking of the competitive environment. The sports polls for colleges do a Top 25, so that's what I will do, too. The rankings are based solely upon statistical analysis of the judges' scores and not personal opinion.

I saw them at Hart Rampage. Oh Em Gee! Their brass sound! I salivated.

Westlake was amazing. the brass had perfect balance. There brass players sounded like a drum corps group. So full and dark and powerful.

You are leaving out a group from the 2A rankings. Does being in 3rd on the grid thus far not count for Western High School to receive any form of mention?

Hello Sandra,

I believe the grid uses "absolute" score values, whereas my rankings compare and contrast based on show scoring level and "margin of victory" between bands and those ahead or behind them.

While Western may have the 3rd highest absolute value score in 2A, when adjusted for show factors and judging anomalies, they actually finished 11th in 2A in this week's rankings (the first week, I believe, they've been out of the Top 10 in my 2A rankings).

Until all bands have at least 3 scores, those rankings mean nothing. If you want to see approximately where you stand, calculate your average score and you will see that your ranking would be lower than 3rd...

Doing this yields the following results:

(1) Royal HS
(2) Serrano HS
(3) Gladstone HS
(4) Western HS
(5) Colony HS
(6) Palisades HS
(7) Saugus HS
(8) Escondido HS
(9) Oceanside HS
(10) Covina HS

Much different than he ranks them. He also has several in the top ten that are not even listed on the grid at all...

Don't worry. As long as you're listed in the top 12 by Championships, we'll see you in San Diego...
