My 2 cents .... I know we have rules to follow, but that weekend was hideous [windy and rainy] ... give the group a break! On the other hand, the director should have known better and made the call to leave the props in the parking lot. Bad choice by the director, bad call by the head judge [don't penalize the kids for a bad choice by the director].

I've heard that one before, "don't penalize the kids"...it just doesn't wash or make sense. Other than fining the director $10, there is no way to enforce ANY rule other than by "penalizing the kids."
Re: Results - Lodi Grape Bowl Classic
Jeff ... I can respectively disagree to a point about your how can you ever enforce a rule without just reading the rule of law. Two examples:
1) School in general. If you have a tardy policy ... you must be in the door by the bell let's say ... and you have a student RUNNING at full speed and they are one door from you. The bell rings, you pull the door shut in their face saying, "A rule is a rule." That kid will never run to your class again ... especially an at risk student.
2) Our activity. Many years ago, at WGI [absolute sticklers for the rules] West regional at Logan, it was incredibly windy outside. When the exit/entrance doors were opened to the lobby during performances, the wind came right through the performance floor. More than one group had backdrops almost fall on kids. Was it their fault ... no! No one tripped on them, ran into them, or fell on them. Several staff members and parents ran on the court from behind during performances so the backdrops would not injure kids. WGI to their credit took the high road and did not disqualify groups for something out of their control ... they saw that it was done not to help, but to keep the kids safe. They met with directors after the show and explained their reasoning for waving the penalties [disqualification]. I was not in Lodi, but I would figure for McClatchy, those backdrops would have fallen if someone would not have held them. Again ... the director screwed up ... but at least the kids were [hopefully] safe, and no one really gained an advantage.
I just feel that the head judge could have looked at the situation and used his BEST JUDGEMENT in assessing the death penalty [disqualification ... you get nothing for your work ... not even a score]. We are all educators and must use our best judgement to benefit our kids all the time ... band competition judges should be the same way. NOTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE.

Re: Results - Lodi Grape Bowl Classic
"Nothing is black and white." Hmmmm... I was just told this the other day. DON'T WANT TO HI-JACK THE "results" THREAD. "Nothing" being black and white...may be part of the reason our "world" is failing.
Again, don't want to hijack the thread. So, I respect HOSTRAUSER'S direction of where my response will go. But, the timing of me being told "nothing is black and white" by an important person and the next dayd "Georgie" writing that...
Music is BLACK AND WHITE.
There ... I found something.

Re: Results - Lodi Grape Bowl Classic
Sometimes it IS better to ask permission than to say your sorry. There should have been the director or at least a staff member up to talk to the head judge a couple of bands prior to get permission. Result DQ. Proper Planning Prevents Poor Results (PPPPR)
