Re: La Palma Days Band Review - 11/12/11
I enjoyed performing in the rain at Arcadia last year! Band review and Field Tournament. Made it way more interesting to say the least
La Palma Days Band Review Organizers- Take This!
Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter
Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly, I've simply got to
If someone takes a spill, it's me and not you
Who told you your're allowed to rain on my parade
I'll march my band out, I'll beat my drum!

Re: La Palma Days Band Review - 11/12/11
In an era in which the only exposure to adversity that some students might face will be that ap class or level 99 in a video game, it seems we are constantly depriving them of chances to face a challange. To realize that life isnt always sunny, but sometimes the sky gets gray and it does rain. And when it does...life doesnt stop. Doing something great was never done by doing something easy.
While I understand the fears of the organizers, at what cost are these decisions being made? How about building a little character.
Say goodbye to "the show must go on"

You're joking right? I cannot remember how many parades WEREN'T cancelled because of rain ... no matter how large or how many bands. ... and seriously I remember marching in those parades in the 70's. Oh and let's talk about the Rose Parades that have been rained on that weren't cancelled. Sorry Jim ... not on your case or anything personal but I agree with Ryan's Rant that this was probably not the best of calls re: cancellation.Jim Bunselmeier wrote:It is a parade, not a band review. There are a lot more people to consider than just bands.
Counter marching inside the arena for the All-Western band review. That was an event to remember.

Re: La Palma Days Band Review - 11/12/11
Unfortunately, there's more to the whole La Palma Days thing than just the parade & band review. The city had a a lot invested in the festival in the park, as well as in police and community services required to run the entire slew of events. The threat of rain posed a financial risk, and the city officials in charge made a fiscally prudent move, however unpopular. Bad for the band community, but smart for the city, especially in today's economy. As far as the actual weather result, we all know too well that you're "darned if you do, darned if you don't" - it didn't rain that much here, but you can bet it would've poured record amounts if they had decided to run the events.

With all respect to those who disagree, I'm with Teever. If it was just a band review, it would be a different story. I got soaked at Arcadia last year and I was really impressed with the bands who stuck it out when the skies opened up.Teever wrote:Unfortunately, there's more to the whole La Palma Days thing than just the parade & band review. ...just did a "rain or shine" day at Trabuco Hills' "Tournament in the Hills"...on and off rain all day 'til the nite show. We all got through it...one group didn't show and 25 others did. GREAT show, smokin' performances in all classes...parents and volunteers and support troops had a ball.

As founder of the La Palma Days Parade and Band Review, and long time fan of band reviews, it was painful when the city canceled the entire weekend. We did not have alternative site (gym or field hall), and no food vendors. We hope that all those bands who have supported us for these many sunny years, will plan on returning next year. The cost factor for the city was a big concern. Unfortunately it did not rain and we look like wimps, sorry Ryan T. I too have marched in the rain, and never minded, but there are other considerations besides the review that came into play.
Re: La Palma Days Band Review - 11/12/11
If the scheduled bands for this year's La Palma Band Review paid an entry fee, I assume said bands will not have to pay an entry fee for next year's event.

I believe we heard that we might be getting that entry fee refunded to us this year. Of course we will go back next year, its hard to argue with a 4 minute bus ride!

FYI, for all bands who entered into the La Palma Days Band Review, there will be a full refund of your entry fee by the city. Those checks will be mailed out in the middle of December. You can check the city website for confirmation.
The city of La Palma appreciates all the participation by over 70 different school groups over the past 27 years and looks forward to next year, with hopefully a full complement of groups.
See you on November 10, 2012....mark your calendars

Re: La Palma Days Band Review - 11/12/11
Keith .. my apologies to you for voicing my frustrations earlier ... I know several people (and have several relatives in LaPalma) who were impacted by the decision to cancel. Having been a coordinator I know this wasn't all your decision and I realize there were more than just the bands involved in the cancellation ... however, also as a coordinator it frustrates me to no end that the band review could have been held despite the rest of the festival's problems. Kudos to LaPalma for the refunds. (and calendar marked for 2012)kan26mayor wrote:FYI, for all bands who entered into the La Palma Days Band Review, there will be a full refund of your entry fee by the city.
