From the looks of this recording http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAstuLk7AUc, they seem to have a good shot of making finals!

Yes, I saw them both last year in St. George. They are arguably the best bands in their respective state. I think both bands will not have a problem making finals. Clovis will probably be in the middle of the pack or top 5 in finals. Foothill will probably be bottom 5 in finals, but competitive nevertheless. Clovis typically has great music, great marching, and are a solid "effective" band. Foothill has been neck-and-neck with the likes of bands like Fountain Valley for the past few years, and just keep getting better and better (IMHO).

That said, though these bands be big, look for small bands like Clovis West and William S. Hart to do well...very well...

Homestead from up north is about that size, too, and Upland isn't much below that.

My initial predictions (classes aren't released until after the event, even the judges won't know, but my BOA spreadsheet has enrollment estimations)...

PRELIMS
CLASS A
None (shouldn't be any Class A bands here)

CLASS AA
1st Covina H.S., CA
2nd Chaminade College Prep H.S., CA
3rd Imperial H.S., CA
Chaminade and Imperial might be close, but I think Covina should be safely in first in this division and sweep captions.

CLASS AAA
1st William S. Hart H.S., CA
2nd Murrieta Mesa H.S., CA
Homestead is right on the border of AAA/AAAA. I have them in AAAA, but should they end up AAA I'd have them 2nd behind Hart, moving MMHS to 3rd. Hart will probably sweep AAA captions either way.

CLASS AAAA
1st Ayala H.S., CA
2nd Upland H.S., CA
3rd Clovis West H.S., CA
All three bands score well in BOA, I would be surprised if any other band places. That said, my "dark horses" for AAAA would be Homestead, Clovis (NM), Thousand Oaks, and Vista Murrieta. All other bands not listed so far should be AAAA also.

FINALS
85.65 Ayala H.S., CA
84.50 Upland H.S., CA
84.00 William S. Hart H.S., CA
83.55 Clovis West H.S., CA
80.10 Homestead H.S., CA
79.50 Clovis H.S., NM
78.60 Thousand Oaks H.S., CA
78.50 Vista Murrieta H.S., CA
77.10 Fountain Valley H.S., CA
76.80 Foothill H.S., NV

The Top 8 I think are locks for Finals. The last two Finals spots should be quite a battle. I went with Fountain Valley and Foothill, but Murrieta Valley and Great Oak should be right there and wouldn't surprise me if they made it. Two of the four should make Finals, two will be left out.

We'll find out in a few days if this is anywhere close to accurate. 8-)

Also, UPDATE: Great Oak has dropped out, unfortunately.

Based on their performances so far, I thnk Clovis, NM Will probably finish 6th or 7th in finals. So far this year, they have the following record:
Oct 6 High Plains Marching Contest, Amarillo,TX. They beat mostly Bands from smaller enrollment schools, but took championship and top Percussion and Guard captions.

Oct 13 Sweepstakes at the Pioneer Marching Festival in Plainview, TX. They were the Biggest school there enrollment wise and beat up on a group of small school Bands.

Oct 20th. They finished second to Air Academy HS out of Colorado at the Zia Marching Fiesta at the University of NM. Air Academy, one of the top three Bands in CO, beat them in every caption at ZIA.

A Good Band but no threat to Ayala.
Deep in the Heart of Texas. Home of the III Mobile Armored Corps and the 1st Cavalry Division, serving America in Iraq

I love how we both vastly underestimated Vista Murrieta, and vastly overestimated William S. Hart. Just goes to show you what a difference a year makes. I think Vista Murrieta made extra, EXTRA sure they wouldn't have a repeat of St. George 2011. They certainly had the talent--directors, staff, students, etc.--to do it. Good for them!
