:yeah: Garey HS again in class A! As one of the smallest bands in this review if not the smallest, good job on getting all the way up to class A for the 2nd year in a row! I think they're marching just under 30 members this year and they sound great!

Best of luck to ALL the bands at this Invitational!

I've always wondered why Rowland doesn't compete in band reviews? It seems to me that if the junior high school Alvarado Intermediate is competing at band reviews, when they go up to Rowland, they would compete too.

I see the old director Vince Banim who's now at West HS will be at the band review, I can't wait to see them on the street!
A bad band director doesn't know what he wants, and good band director do know, and an excellent band director knows how to get it...

You have to understand the community the Rowland Heights is in and then you would know. Many of the students have Chinese school as well as SAT prep school on Saturday mornings. I do not see them being a parade band anytime soon.

There's always ways to work around taking the SAT and/or SAT prep school and still participate in parades/band reviews/field shows, etc., so it's probably just a preference that the staff and students have. Taking the SAT/ACT exams is very important and vital to determine one's eligibility in the school of their choice so for many, they have to weigh their options and decide if they can handle multiple activities (i.e. Band, sports, cheerleading, etc.) and learn to balance those with taking the necessary exams they need to take at the same time. It's about how well you're able to manage these activities.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how West will do at Chino. Best of luck to them as well as the rest of the bands.

That's a bummer! Parade band is my favorite and pretty much that's how I came up with my username!

I understand the community that I'm in that's why I'm keeping my kids from that life! My cousins went to Harvard and Standford and was in the Wilson HS's color guard. Yes, isn't it good to know that we can still survive with just public education.

Aren't Saturdays meant to be for band? :tbone: :Tu: :clap2: :shs: And Sundays meant to be for church and Disneyland? :read: :mm: It just seems like if Alvarado is moving up 50 8th graders a year that was already competing on Saturdays, Rowland should be able to come up with at least 100 kids between 9-12 grades.

Rowland did attend Chino band review in 2006. Even though we did decent, band members opted to not want to do it anymore. It was something that a few of us wanted to do and we made the attempt for 2 parades. A few members couldn't go and it was pretty much decided to be too much trouble.
and
Getting 100 kids to go is more than half. Generally, if one person doesn't have to go, another doesn't want to go, and another...

The vast majority of band parents at Rowland don't want to add anything more to band than was there the year before. That is, unless you tell them about 4 years in advance

Bottom line... the band director chooses the vision and direction for his/her band. What may be important to one director may not be so for the next.

If the schedule gets too demanding, and they feel it will get in the way of the studies, they will pull them. I think Rowland has its niche in the marching world and really there is nothing more to comment about it. Trust me, I know their director. I'm sure he will be the first to tell you along with the students, that they do not want call times at 7am
