4A band discussion

Post by Ravel » Mon Nov 01, 2010 10:42 pm

So what do you guys think of this year's 4a groups? Any especially strong programs or surprises? Any predictions for champs?

Despite the obvious runner for gold (Hart), I think Valencia has silver locked tight and South Hills probably has bronze. What do you guys think?

How about Granada hills Charter? I've seen there show at south bay invitational and at rampage... And they have beaten some 5a and 6a bands.. I believe they are a good contender this year at champs.

Hart has held on to the top spot in 4A for the past 6 years. Hart always starts the season strong and scores very well throughout the season. However, by the end of the season there will be several other bands that will finish strong. Is there a 4A band that has what it takes and can leave it all on the field on December 4th to take over the top spot at SCSBOA Championships?

If anyone can do it, it would most likely be South Hills or Valencia, Valencia has an awesome guard that will make for good GE. South Hills has a good overall package as well.

Now I'm not trying to bash hart here or anything, but they have proved their point already, they are the best 4A band in SCSBOA. They should really consider moving up to 6A or trying WBA. I think that they should give some of the other bands a chance, but hey if they want to win it every year they can do that since its the directors decision, once again, that is jusy MY opinion.

Not looking to offend anyone.

Yes I think if anyone can take the 1st place spot besides Hart, it would be a battle between Valencia and South Hills. Both programs are great, and have different strengths. Historically Valencia has been a little bit ahead score-wise every year but that doesn't mean South Hills doesn't have a shot at it either. I'm actually very excited to see how the top 3 will turn out (of course, Hart's the predictable winner here).

and about what 123soundoffpeople commented on, I too wonder why Hart still insists on stay in 4a. I know that you can change divisions in SCSBOA no? I guess they just want that trophy!

According to SCSBOA rules, a band may select to compete in a higher class but not in a lower class.

2009 SCSBOA FIELD ADJUDICATION CONTEST RULES

Classification of Competitive Units
There are six (6) classes of bands in SCSBOA field show competitions. Classification of each band is based on the TOTAL number of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Performers (Performing Musicians).

Performing musicians include all Brass, Woodwind and Percussion players. Drum majors or equipment/sound operators are not counted
unless they also perform on a musical instrument.

Classification is as follows:
1A……….1-50 2A……….51-70 3A……….71-90
4A……….91-120 5A……….121-150 6A……….151-up (or fewer than 151 by Director’s choice)

Based on the above formula, bands will select the classification at their first SCSBOA adjudicated tournament. Once this decision is made, the group will remain in that division for the entire season.

Bands may select to compete in a larger band classification if they wish. Bands may not compete in a smaller band classification.

Yes South Hills did a great job at the last competition! But that doesn't mean they are catching up to Hart; scores between competitions are hard to gauge and harder to compare. It seems like every year all the bands improve though, so I would love it if 4a became an epic showdown with scores within a point of each other! ;)

I can't really give too much advice about leading your band, but the best way that I can think of is setting the example yourself by being someone your band would want to look up to, and then showing your passion for band so they will follow suit! If you are a good student, a good musician, a good friend, and a good leader then hopefully your band mates will see that and follow. And if not, then at least you're doing great for yourself!

you cant compare scores between shows, but in the past years, south hills has been catching up to hart, and personally, i think that auxiliary should have gone to South hills last year. Who knows, maybe this is the year Hart will be toppled.... still, alot can change from now till finals!
When in doubt, COUNT IT OUT!!!!

Yes I agree about last year Auxiliary belonging to SH over Hart. I am with you in hoping for an upset (no offense Hart, we all know you guys are AWESOME, but it's time for someone else to win!). Reminds me of last year's indoor percussion - South Hills vs. Los Alamitos vs. Pacifica... Hahaha

I'm rooting for South Hills but I know that Valencia has a great show as well. I'm really excited to see what will happen!

According to the SCSBOA 2010 Championship Grid,
http://www.scsboa.org/mb/grid2010.pdf
neither Hart or Valencia participated in any SCSBOA tournaments this past weekend so it's hard to compare the progress made over the last couple of weeks between the three schools. South Hills competed this past weekend and received the following scores at the Sierra Vista show:
Percussion - 184 South Hills
Auxiliary - 86.3 South Hills
Visual - 178 South Hills
G.E. - 307 South Hills
Music - 394.5 South Hills
BAND - 87.95 South Hills (4A)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_ikKXExgOw

South Hills and Hart will both be participating at the MBOS Championships on Nov 13. It will be interesting to see how both of these bands score.
http://mbos.wgasc.org/schedule_sched_ex ... ?Contest=4

All bands will be perfecting their field show over the last remaining weeks before SCSBOA Championships. The only performance that will determine the 4A Champ happens on Dec 4 at Warren HS in Downey.

That's funny - South Hills is using Harts opener from a previous year (might be last years?)

As of today 9 Nov.10 with last posted scores on 6 Nov. on SCSBOA website:
# 1 currently is South Hills
# 2 currently is Granada Hill Charter
# 3 currently is Santa Monica
# 4 currently is John North

Please do not count out these other two bands in 3rd and 4th, or the remaining bands in 4A that round out the top 10. A lot can happen between now and championships.

Well I certainly don't mean to count the rest of the bands out, but realistically speaking, the top three is probably set to be Hart/Valencia/South Hills in whichever order. Granada Hills, Santa Monica, and John North are definitely doing pretty well this season but their scores show them ending up in the 4th-6th place range.

Hart scored 85 + 86 early on in the season. Given their history they are likely to take gold again

South Hills scored lower in the beginning of the season but their past three scores were 87, 87, and 81. Pretty good for silver or bronze, MAYBE gold?

Valencia only had one show early in the season but they scored an 81.

Granada hit 80 at the same date as Valencia, and they haven't been in any more shows as well. So if anything, Granada and Valencia may be duking it out for bronze if the scores atm were to reflect the ending placements (but that's not how things usually work out). I think if they were both to perform this week then we'll be more sure, but Valencia has always had a strong program and this year it is no exception. I think they've medalled at every SCSBOA champs they've participated in.

Redlands East Valley also did well almost hitting 80 this past weekend, and Santa Monica and John North reached the 80's this past weekend so they are ahead of the rest of the pack in terms of scores, but the top schools reached the 80s way earlier in the season.

I know that none of this is indicative of the final outcome, but based on these scores and the reputations of the bands, I'd say, in no order, Hart/SH/Valencia for 1-3, Granada/SantaMonica/Redlands/JohnNorth for 4-7, and Glendora/Wilson/LosAltos/ for 8-10, Warren/Baldwinpark for 11-12.

What do you guys think?
