just curious...How is colony (2a) in second? They have had the highest scores almost all season.

The grid says they're in first also..

You'll note that Colony was 1st in my rankings until this week, too.

Quite simply: the scores at Ramona were pretty inflated and Gladstone's performance at Arcadia was more statistically significant. If it makes you feel any better, Gladstone only scraped ahead by 0.1

I think Santa Margarita will surprise people if they're attending championships...

Hostrauser,
I would be kind of interested in seeing how this would look with only the bands attending Championships included. I could probably do that myself, but I'm too lazy I guess.

Well considering he only includes 10 band per division, you actually couldn't give full championships predictions. I'd like to say that I, too, would be interested in seeing this.

In the 2A ranking there is an error. Western High School is actually seeded 6th and not LaPuente.

I know there is a system you utilize but it does not work the same way you would use for sport teams. You have artistic ezpression and personal taste that can not be factored in.

Then how are bands scored? All I'm doing is analyzing the scores.

"Artistic expression" is one of those phrases that gets thrown around a lot by the boosters, but doesn't usually make sense to anyone else, especially not the judges. There is no way to define that term that doesn't fit one of the objective evaluations outlined in the score sheets. Phrasing and dynamics? That's factored in. Articulations? That is too.

Those (and several other things also on the sheets) are the only measurable methods of communicating artistic passion. And they can theoretically be evaluated objectively (not that everyone shares the same view). That's what the scores are.

Factors of personal taste are largely addressed by the score sheet format and weight of each caption. SCSBOA is music-heavy, as are a lot of other circuits. Within the music caption, subsections define how much each element of sound should relate to the overall score.

It's not a perfect system, and there's certainly more to a show than its score, but in this context it would be hopeless and trivial to try to measure show quality by anything else.
