new directors
I hope the new director at Carlsbad High School can get the program back to the way it was around 2005. They were so good then. Best of luck.

Re: new directors
You must have forgotten the two championships we won in the last three years.
But yes, best of luck to Mr. Bovie.

Re: new directors
I am aware of the 3A championships, but the bands from 2001(?) to 2006 were pretty awesome. I recall them being in 5A and 6A then and knocking off some major powerhouse groups in tournaments and I don't think the later bands, although decent, were in the same league. I live in Orange County so I am just calling it as I see it. I especially remember the "Rhapsody In Blue" show and saw thm somewhere in 2002, I think, with music by Debussy...wow. Just a class act.
Re: new directors
I have to wonder what the writer is trying to get at. Does he want to sharpshoot a Band that won 2 SCSBOA 3A Championships in the last 3 years because they were not 5A or 6A. There are many reasons why Bands may not be able to get back to a previous level, which if the writer had considered, he would not have made such a big deal about. Consider the possibilities.
A. School enrollment changes due to new schools, thus cutting down the number of available Band members.
B. School Funding for a feeder system.
C. District policies which hamper fielding a bigger Band.
D. De emphasis of the Band Program due to School policies.
E. All of the above. Plus more reasons.
I fail to see what being from Orange County gives the writer the thought that he or she can call it like he sees it. I did not know the water in Orange County developed Oracles far superior to the rest of CA.
Writer, by the way, in 2006, Longview High School in TX marched over 220 students(look at you tube if you do not believe it. Last year they marched about 120, due to changes in school enrollment. Was the Band not as good because they only had 120 members? Fortunately they are in TX where the UIL Marching Contests determine if you meet a Standard of performance(62 consecutive years of 1st Division Ratings in Marching Contest). The Judges did not say the Band in 2011 was not the quallity of 2006, that may be true, but no Band stays totally the same. Yes the Carlsbad Band Was smaller, but they still won, maybe you should put yourself in their shoes and find out if you could have done any better under their conditions.

Re: new directors
Actually, I think Carlsbad was smaller back in 2005. I was just basically wishing the new guy luck and was hoping Carlsbad would regain the quality they had back then. Winning a trophy does not necessarily mean a band is great. I just think in the mid-2000's Carlsbad was "the" band in San Diego County...along with Mt. Carmel and I was wishing the person luck in getting it back to that stature. I was not saying the later bands were bad...they were good, but for my musical tastes, as an outside looking in (the reason I said I was from Orange County...not meaning that I am better), Carlsbad was pretty awesome back then. Giving someone a compliment is not necessarily insulting someone else.
Re: new directors
I hope you weren't/aren't a drum major (as your name suggests). I expect drum majors to be exemplary leaders, and though you are trying to wish someone good luck, by stating this band is nothing like it use to be, shows a lack of respect and lack of understanding of the many variables that affect band size and ability level. Your only posts are on this topic, leading me to think that you were in the band back in it's "glory days" and are fishing for compliments about how it use to be. Most "outsiders looking in" don't join a band message board and post about how good a specific band use to be unless they are pushing an agenda or fishing for compliments. I do hope you were never/are never a drum major.

Re: new directors
Carlsbad's 2nd High School will open Fall of 2013, so he's basically got this year before losing a bunch of enrollment/feeders.Drummajor4ever wrote:I hope the new director at Carlsbad High School can get the program back to the way it was around 2005. They were so good then. Best of luck.

Basically, it sounds like you want the new band director to have the band play programs that you like, as opposed to anything else. And, by essentially dismissing what they've won recently, you're elevating your own opinion as an assessor of quality above the analysis and opinion of trained and experienced judges.Drummajor4ever wrote:Actually, I think Carlsbad was smaller back in 2005. Of course I get you're well-wishing a new director, that's fine. It's the other things you're saying. You could have just said, "I liked their shows in earlier years better than the ones they've done recently" rather than use your tastes as a benchmark for a band program's quality.

Re: new directors
The new director at Temecula Valley High School is Mrs. Amy Thomas. The previous director, Mr. Anthony Scarcella, retired in June.
