parade drum major judge

Post by dmloser » Tue Nov 19, 2019 8:30 pm

I am currently head drum major at Montebello, and have garnered the interest of becoming a parade drum major judge for SCSBOA in the future. What are the requirements? Many thanks in advance. (:

I'd suggest looking into joining Drum Majors of Southern California - https://www.drummajorsofsocal.org/ - as their judging system is the most similar to SCSBOA's and a number of their judges also judge SCSBOA competitions during the season.

Hello,
I am happy that you are interested in becoming a drum major judge. Here is the link for the apprentice paperwork for SCSBOA. https://www.scsboa.org/wp-content/uploa ... cation.pdf

I recommend starting the process by becoming a drum major instructor. Once you have taught successfully then stretch into becoming a judge for a local drum major circuit. Judging for a circuit that emphasizes parade style drum majoring will be most beneficial. After you do that, I would recommend apprenticing to become an SCSBOA parade judge.

Having judged parades and solo competitions for almost 20 years I can tell you that judging a major band review (Chino, Arcadia, King, etc.) is much harder and faster paced than solo competitions.

Let me know if there is any other information that would be helpful for you.
