NCBA champs-scores?
what did you guys thnk of the results? i only found out the open guards, that vallejo got 5th, california got 4th..then champs went to santa cruz.
does anyone know who got 3-1?
i honestly didn't think vallejo deserved 5th. i may be biased since i'm an alum. santa cruz i THOUGHT was...logan-ish, so the whole season i wasn't sure on how to feel about their show. if you've watched logan the past 4 years, you would've been able to pick out what parts came from what shows.
i thought fairfield deserved champs. from behind my camcorder, they were pretty clean. is it just me?

ncba championships
you're right on pitchick00! after santa cruz's show ended, i couldn't believe what i saw! they totaly photocopied logan.
but i also wanted to ask everyone what they thought about galt getting 5th in intermediate. i'm a graduated member of galt's wintergaurd, so i'm sure that i'm bias. but i was shocked at their placement and score.

Last night was AWEFUL. I couldnt believe the placements I was hearing. Granted Im in scholastic and Ive only seen a few other scholastic shows, but I firmly believe that we werent 5th place bad. And Vallejo? That blew me away, I went up and hugged their captain right after. That was hideous scoring. The reigning open and scholastic NCBA champs of 2004 both get 5th (technically 6th)?? And I missed my senior prom for THAT?
Pardon my rant.

snuh, guh, munch...NYEAH! =)
If you feel that strongly about things, folks should consider contacting Roland Nielson the judges coordinator for NCBA, mail in a critique sheet with the judges' tape I believe. Contact info is on their website www.ncbaonline.org.
My middle school performed in the first half. Thought placements were pretty fair. Didn't stick around to see the Open Guards at Champs, but based on what I saw throughout the season, I can't believe Vallejo was put under California? That's a HUGE blatant mistake, besides some weird placements in the top 4. California moves and performs well, but their show and equipment doesn't come close to Vallejo.

Hmph!
Yes, I do agree! I am utterly appalled by the results of this year's CHAMPIONSHIP! Actually, I'm too pissed off to put something down for fear that I'll really end up hurting someone's feelings! There are a couple of things that did bother me though...
1.) A CCGC OPEN class guard lost to a CCGC SCHOLASTIC A class guard.
2.) California HS placed over Vallejo HS, who without a doubt had a higher mastery over their equipment and had a better show concept.
3.) I still say watch James Logan's 2003 Carmen show and tell me that the show design and placement of Santa Cruz's "Da Vinci" show are not strangely similar...
4.) Fairfield and Vallejo, the NCBA's strongest groups when it comes to equipment and technique lost to a group that had horrible technique and quite possibly one of the ugliest freehands i've ever seen...
I knew CHAMPS was going to be interesting, but I didn't think it was going to be that disappointing... it's an outrage if you ask me... Vallejo deserved something much higher than that... and so did Fairfield.

We were robbed.
I couldn't believe the results. The scholastic division also got a kick in the face. Armijo 5th? Dead last! And vallejo too? something is wrong. Our scoring has been so inconsistent throughtout the season that we don't know what to make of it. At foothill, Armijo scored lower in the movement caption than Rodriguez and they are in a lower division. Vallejo deserved better and so didi Armijo. I liked Fairfield's show and granted it was clean, but it wasn't hard. I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter how good of a show your instructors write; how much movement and equipment vocabulary it has, in the end the deciding factor between 1st and 5th place falls on the school's reputation and how much the judges like your instructors and this is not acceptable.
and i missed my senior prom for this crap too.

Yea, it's too bad such controversy can spoil a good time.
Just wanted to say thanks to Golden Valley for hosting champs. I had a great time and I LOVE your show. It just made me say WOW! Such intensity.
Cal High, thanks you So much for pulling our floor for us. You guys are awesome. Had a great time hanging out with you at your BBQ. We love you guys!
Everyone I was able to watch did a great job and should be proud no matter what others say.

shafted
i agree Jsten05. u guys were shafted.
vallejo has twice the amout of vocabulary as all the other guards in the open division and their mastery of technique far exceeds them. their show is awsome. As far as Armijo goes, i have seen great improvement in them in the last few years. Their instructors are doing an amazing job. Vallejo's too. I really enjoyed both their shows last year and thought they did outstanding this year. When i heard how both schools placed i was shocked. They have such original ideas and it is a fresh change. I enjoy being a spectator and hope that u guys get to the bottom of this issue.

If you take a look at the scores in the intermediate catagory, we were SUPER tight. Though, I have to agree that there were some suprises that night. I heard Vallejo had some issues on the floor, and since the Open divison was so tight this year, even the smallest mistakes could have affected their scores. I didn't get a chance to see Open... I was outside since that gym wasn't the greatest... I am very sorry that Vallejo fell that far. Their show was so amazing, and original. Their attention to detail, and their vocab. was off the hook. They were shafted. But as I said, I think that every little mistake hurt them. And if everyone else was on their game, that's the way the cookie crumbled. If you want change, you have to make waves people. Get to the June meeting.
I am NOT too old for this!

Some things to consider about championships:
The show was double-paneled. Instead of the usual 1 judge per caption, there were 2, for a total of 6 judges on the stand instead of only 3 (BTW, I heard that NCBA was thinking about reducing the championships panel back down to a single panel, one judge per caption...personally, I think the best thing they ever did was to go to a double-panel format.).
While some of the judges may not be as skilled in evaluating indoor color guard as others, I think people need to be careful when allegations of favoritism come into play. A double panel acts as a safety valve for precisely this type of thing. One man's (or woman's) "opinion" does not carry the same amount of weight on a double panel, for good or for bad.
Also, while some guards may have similarities to others, either in emulation of style or color, one has to be careful when making allegations of plagiarism. Sometimes guards either share staff members, or the staff members were taught by the staff members of the guard that is being "mimicked" (best word I can find right now). It's hard to say unless you know for sure. Plagiarism is a serious allegation, and if one is going to make that accusation, he/she better be seriously ready to back it up with cold, hard facts.
While the scores for certain classes have been posted, the recaps haven't. We may know the final result, but maybe there were penalties we don't know about, or there may have been some problems in the individual captions, or perhaps general effect made the difference in some of the placings. It's hard to make a judgement when you don't know the full picture.
I wish I had been able to see all of the classes to be able to have a more accurate picture of the situation, especially the one with the open guards. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to be there at that time.
PLEASE don't get me wrong. I know many of the directors and staff at the schools that are being discussed. I admire and respect them all. To hear some of the rhetoric that's being tossed around...well, it doesn't make the matter any better. In my opinion, it slanders the activity.
Sorry if I come off being so serious. My advice--check out the recaps, watch some video, then if there is still a problem, talk to Roland. He's a great guy and will be more than willing to listen.
