Memorizing Music

Post by Bass-Clarinet-Rules » Tue Sep 24, 2024 11:26 am

My band uses flip books but I find I focus too much on the music and mess up the marching. How do I memorize my music so I can focus on marching and watching the drum major?

Practice practice practice practice. Keep playing the music until it's ingrained in your brain.

I have always struggled to memorize music personally. The trick that worked for me was working one measure at a time. Learn measure 1 with music, turn the stand around and then play measure 1 from memory. When I could do that 5 times in a row, then it was time to add 1 more measure. Then play measures 1 and 2, until I get it right 5 times. Continue adding measures until you finish the song. The first song will be the hardest to memorize, after that it becomes a little bit easier each time. Good luck!
