I had forgotten that this thread was the impetus for the march library.

Anyway, 2008 Edition of "The List" coming soon.

indeed this is the thread responsible for WoP's fantastic march library
just for fun i decided to make a list of my own, not nearly as extensive as Hostrauser's or elaborate for that matter but here is what i pretty much based it off of.

Tonality...i like dark ones (20)
how well i feel it was scored and written (20)
the over all melody (20)
contrast through the different sections (20)
and difficulty while factoring in PLAYABILITY (20)
total score out of 100 (like band)

so here are my top 25 marches

25. Marche Simoraine - Clive Barraclough (love it but it's a beast)
24. Knight Templar - George Allan (again pretty hard)
23. BB&CF - Ord Hume
22. Unter der Admirals Flagge - Julius Fucik
21. Carry On - Herbert Winson
20. Arnhem - A.E. Kelley
19. In Storm and Sunshine - Heed
18. Homesickness - Trominov
17. Admiral of the Air - H.L. Blankenburg
16. Viva Rimmer - J. Whittle
15. Farewell to a Slavic Woman - V. Agapkin
14. Saint Petroc - David Marshall
13. March of the Guards Mortar Men - Tchernetsky
12. The Glory of Cory - Broadbent
11. Washington Grays - Claudio S. Grafulla
10. The Elephant - Ord Hume
9. Arromanches - A.E. Kelley
8. Army of the Nile - K. Alford
7. The Centaur - Broadbent
6. Muhledorf - Broadbent
5. The Cossack - W. Rimmer
4. Purple Carnival - H. Alford
3. Boys of the Old Brigade - Chambers (sorry Hostrauser)
2. Jugendfrughling - H.L. Blankenberg
1. Sonntag Ist's - E. Stieberitz

so there are mine, it took me a while to decide playability was a major factor in my list i found my self thinking (especially on marches mine glory of cory, simoraine, and knight templar ect) could a high school band play this WELL and for a couple the answer for me was no....unless you march in a Power House but those a few and far between. so in all actuality my favorite march (tie between the 3 broadbent marches and mortar men) isn't #1 because i feel their difficulty is to much to handle for 95% of high school bands.

Fun Trivia Does anyone know the most successful (winning) parade march throughout the history of marching band in California (i don't)
but i have a feeling vore, bandmaster, or hostrauser might have a good idea.

I am certain for SoCal, dr would know too.

My guess would be Glorious Victory or Army of the Nile

Whatever it is, I'd bet my left ear that it is deffinately not a Sousa march.

Yeah, but if you add in NorCal I'm sure Glorious Victory climbs up a little bit. :)

phatbob: the only march on your list I'm not familiar with is "Homesickness" by Trominov. Upload to the library, please? :) Also, have you checked out "Amsterdam Harbour" by A.E. Kelly? It sounds just like his other marches (which you apparently like). I'm indifferent on Kelly, all his marches seem to follow the same formula to me: fantastic intros, pretty good first strains, then duller and duller and duller as the march goes on.

Really? I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere. I'll try to send it to Dave this weekend, unless someone beats me to it.

The only other events for which I have complete or extensive records are Chino and Arcadia. Unfortunately I only have paper copies of the results and marches played and that information has never been compiled. That will be a fun (?) project for me to attempt after November 1! Right now I am busily preparing for my two events. Patience! :D

The following marches have won the majority of Sweepstakes and/or Music Awards at the MAJOR band reviews in Southern California over the past 40+ years:

Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company
Army of the Nile
Boys of the Old Brigade, The
Bullets & Bayonets
Conqueror, The
Eagle Squadron
Fairest of the Fair, The
Gallant Seventh, The
Gloria
Glorious Victory
Joyce’s 71st N.Y. Regiment
Library of Congress, The
Loyal Legion, The
March Grandioso
Purple Carnival
Rifle Regiment, The
Royal Welch Fusiliers
Solid Men to the Front
Southerner, The
Stars and Stripes Forever, The
Under the Double Eagle
Washington Grays

And.... Bravura is not one of the most successful marches.

I may have forgotten a couple, but these are the great majority.

I feel safe in saying that we'll be able to add Eagle, Globe and Anchor after this year.

Could someone take the time to also include the top 3 or 5 marches following who won each year?
