After an early morning conference call with WBA Board and Leadership, the very difficult decision was made to cancel the 2018 WBA Championship Weekend. This decision does not come easily, but the group was committed to acting in the best interest of the health and safety of all participants, staff, and spectators.
Friday afternoon projections were very optimistic, but the Air Quality Index continued to deteriorate overnight, ending in a 150+ “Unhealthy” projection for Saturday’s events in Bakersfield.
At that juncture, there was no way to confidently proceed as planned with this weekend’s events.
WBA understands and appreciates the thousands of hours that have gone into this season and this weekend from so many people, and we wish the outcome were better for everyone involved.
Participating Directors will receive additional information today, regarding event logistics. All band participation fees will be refunded.
As we are all incredibly disappointed with this decision, we continue to send our prayers to the communities and families affected by these tragic wildfires around California.
Have a safe and successful school year, and we will see you all in 2019.
