Performing Arts credit for color guard/winter guard
I am trying to get Performing Arts credit for my color guard second semester. First semester they receive PE credit. Has anyone found a way to get a UC approved color guard class?
UC credit
At my school we've been having that problem for years!! Seriously...YEARS! You're pretty lucky that the color guart at your school recieves PE credit first semester. We get nothing! Pretty much color guard is an elective at my school. Not a performing art, sport...NOTHING! It really sux! A couple of years ago, there was a petition thingy created at my school were all the teachers wanting color guard to become a PA signed and so many other people signed it...(not just from my school, but from colleges and all) and it was sent to my principal and a few UC schools but nothing happened. I would really love to get credit for being in color guard, makes me mad

seriously, it's so dumb. how can you argue that guard isn't a visual or performing art? (i seem to remember my instructor reminding us to perform). at my school dance gets credit for fine art, so does cheer, and band, but guard just gets PE and elective credit. by the time i graduate from hs i think i will have enough PE credits for like 4 people!

our guard gets credit for pe, and i think for visual arts too. THey get pe credit because they're enrolled in marching band pe, which all freshmen and sophomores have to do, so when the band is in the off season, the band runds the mile twice a week and tthe olorguard has winterguard to keep them excercising. It counts for both semesters because after winterguard we march in the spring again, so there's not much down time.

I guess each school district is different on this and thats part of the problem. I think around here, for a band person to get a PE credit the band director has to have a PE credential so we would assume that a fine arts credential is needed as well for fine arts credit....but that would be too logical.sabrebatgirl wrote:Our school counts band as a fine art but not guard and that makes me angry. I now have to take some fine art class and I don't have time for it because guard is in that block and I can't handle 7 classes, my other ones are too hard. Bascially, I'm being screwed by the system.
I know you guardies work your tails off year round and for the most part would do it no matter what but it would be nice to get a break on school credits.
With all the crap many schools give to their band and guard students its no wonder fewer students are participating.
Truth is not a theory..
Fine Arts Credit
As a parent of two colorguard daughters, I have been fighting this problem for years. My elder daughter is at UCSD and was able to get in before it became a requirement but her sister is heading to UC___ next fall and needs the credit.
As I understand it, it is up to the Band Director to fill out the paperwork and submit it to the School District Office in order to get the performing arts credit. At our High school the choir director was able to get performing arts credit for the "Christmas Handbell Ringers" and for them to get credit and not the COLORGUARD, is criminal. I will continue to Badger the Band Director until he gets the paperwork done. Merry Christmas Doug!

Change Your Title!!!
I have been interested in this topic for a while.. It beats me that the leaders of the Colorguard and Winterguard activity don't sit down and CHANGE THE NAME OF THE ACTIVITY!!!... When I was active in fund raising and foundation grants I found virtually no arts foundation or grant giver who could even imagine what 'COLORGUARD' was... After all we do not carry 'The Colors' and in many cases they can't imagine what we guard.... I would suggest that you approach the school administration with a request to fund a new 'Dance Program' .. they understand DANCE... back it up with a video of what you do... and don't be afraid to talk to the school board ... In general we are more athletic than many athleticf activities and we are also very artistic... so we are an arts organization.... C'Mon WGI start thinking about a new name for your Dance teams with props.... I can assure you that you will find more benafactors and foundation and arts money.... The Name colorguard stood the activity well when we marched under the auspicies (sic) of the Veterans groups .... After all we don't use the name 'Fife and Drum Corps' to describe our marching drum corps.....
OK OK.. I am open to comments.. and especially from those who have been succesful in using DANCE applications for arts funding..... Harvey@worldofpageantry.com 714-952-2263

Colorguard Name Change
I agree with Harvey to a point. I know that "Colorguard" is listed as "Tall Flags" on the high school report card in our district. In the last couple of years we have changed our name from Band and Pageantry to Band and Colorguard.
The more "Colorguard" is promoted, it will become more familiar with the college administrators and they will understand the dance format.
Our school is fortunate to have two school board members as a part of the band boosters and maybe with a little help from them and the band director we can get performing arts credit at the University of California.
