Re: NFL Football Pool Game V
Up 24-7 in the 4th Quarter, the Chargers are dangerously close to losing to the Oakland Raiders. The only thing sadder than blowing a 17-point 4th Quarter lead, at home, to a 4-11 team, would be that at 6-10 the Chargers would still finish 2nd in the AFC West. That's why I'm not sold on the Broncos as a Super Bowl contender, Manning or no Manning. Denver only went 2-3 this season against teams that ended the year with a winning record. They've bloated their record feasting on a truly pathetic division, the worst football has seen in many years.
[UPDATE: San Diego barely avoided the fail whale, 24-21. At only 7-9, they finish the year in 2nd place with a 3 game lead over 3rd place.]

Re: NFL Football Pool Game V
Worst Divisions in football (records of bottom three teams)
2012: AFC West (13-35)
2011: AFC South (16-32)
2010: NFC West (18-30)
2009: NFC West (14-34)
2008: NFC West (13-35)
2007: AFC East (12-36)
2006: NFC North (17-31)
2005: NFC West (15-33)
2004: NFC West (16-32)
2003: AFC West (18-30)
2002: NFC North (13-35) (first year with eight divisions)
2001: NFC West (15-33) (last year with six divisions)
2000: AFC Central/AFC West (14-34)
1999: AFC Central/NFC West (12-36)
1998: NFC West (14-34)
1997: AFC West (16-32)
1996: NFC West (12-36)
1995: NFC East (15-33)
1994: AFC Central (16-32)
1993: AFC East (17-31)
I was a little surprised to see that this was the first time the AFC West was the worst division in football in a decade. And I didn't realize just how bad the NFC West truly has been since the end of the Niners dynasty.
Bad news for the Broncos? Only three of these twenty-two division champions would go on to win the Super Bowl (including both years when there was a tie: Ravens in 2000, Rams in 1999; Cowboys in 1995 were the third). But a ton of them (like 10-12, I lost count) made it to the Super Bowl and lost (including the 16-0 Patriots of 2007).

Re: NFL Football Pool Game V
Sorry you guys. With all the holiday hubbub, plus we didn't do our family get-together for Christmas till yesterday, I hadn't even started my data entry of picks as of last night. I was going to enter picks last night/early AM after I got Mom tucked into bed.
Then, well, Mom fell off her bed and it was a trip to the ER. She was sitting on the side of her bed watching TV (as she always does), and I was waiting for her to call me and have me tuck her in. Next thing I know, she's hollering for me and I go in there and find her on the floor. So, I've been at the hospital since 3:30am this morning.
She has a fracture of the fibula, on the same leg she fractured her femur two years ago. Good thing is, it's apparently a non-weight bearing bone (according to the ortho guy), and she isn't on restrictions for weight bearing. She also will not need surgery for it. Bad thing is, she's in a terrible amount of pain. Tentative prognosis is they's get a pain management program going, do some PT/OT, etc, and probably off to a temporary rehab place. Total of perhaps a few weeks (as opposed to the 4 months we went through all this with her femur two years ago).
I will try to post results tomorrow night when I get back from the hospital, assuming there are no surprises there. In the mean time, I will at least post next week's Game Open Announcement for the Wild Card Weekend.

Re: NFL Football Pool Game V
Saturday, January 5th
1. Cincinnati Bengals
Worrisome factoid: In their past four games, all against playoff teams, the Texans are 1-3. In their past nine games, only two of Houston's six wins came against teams that finished the season with a winning record.
2. Green Bay Packers
Worrisome factoid: The Vikings are a surprise playoff team because 12 of their 16 games this season were in domes, where Adrian Peterson could get good traction and the elements didn't make things hard on Christian Ponder. In their four outside games? 0-4. And now their first playoff game is at Lambeau in January? Bye bye.
Sunday, January 6th
3. Baltimore Ravens
Worrisome factoid: The Indy Colts are another team that rode indoor/home success into the playoffs. During the season the Colts had three road games against teams that ended the year with winning records. They lost by 20 (Bears), 35 (Patriots), and 12 (Texans, Houston's only win in last four games). They also lost by 26 in New Jersey against the Jets. Even Baltimore's banged-up defense should be more than enough to send the Colts packing early.
4. Seattle Seahawks
Impressive factoid: Not sure people appreciate just how good the Seahawks are. They were 4-1 this season against playoff teams, beating both the Packers and the Patriots. Their five losses were by 4, 6, 7, 4, and 3 points. No one blew them out. Their point differential for the season was +167, third in the NFL and first in the NFC (ahead of Packers, Falcons, and Niners).
